Overview
This new initiative for teachers of mathematics in grades PreK-12 is focused on research-based strategies and resources that address problem solving to support all students who struggle in learning higher order mathematics content and skills.
Purpose
The purpose of Keys of Problem Solving In Mathematics (KoPS) is to provide teachers of mathematics in grades PreK-12
with research-based strategies in instruction, assessment, accommodations, and technology to help students learn problem solving skills in mathematics.
Background and Rational
- In 2004-2005, 4 of 67 school districts (6%) met AYP targets in Math for the students with disabilities (SWD) category.
- In 2005-2006 according to FCAT results, 67% of all students with disabilities did not achieve the necessary mastery level 3 on state assessments in Math (FDOE, 2006).
- The Advisory Committee of Project CENTRAL recommended development, implementation, and continuous monitoring and improvement of an additional Math initiative (PC Advisory Committee minutes, 2006).
What Participants Can Expect to Learn
- To implement specific, research based intervention strategies for problem solving in mathematics.
- To incorporate the revised Florida Sunshine State Standards in mathematics.
- To integrate technology based resources and manipulatives for problem solving.
- To make instructional decisions to plan and teach more effectively.
